"Triangle's beginnings came from the desire of some congenial friends to extend their friendship for life."

The History of Triangle

Like those of most other fraternities, Triangle's beginnings came from the desire of some congenial college friends to extend their friendship, not only through college, but also for life. It was in the fall of 1906 that 16 civil engineering Juniors at the University of Illinois began the association that became Triangle Fraternity. These Founders based their organization on the principles of honor, friendship, character, brotherhood, courage, and ideals.

History of Triangle FraternityIn 1909 the Illinois chapter brought a similar group from Purdue University into their fellowship and Triangle became a national fraternity. Despite limitation of membership to those whose studies are in technology and science, Triangle is a general social fraternity and a senior member of the National Interfraternity Conference.

The Tri-State chapter of Triangle has a unique history. In 1969, a colony of Alpha Epsilon Pi was organized on the TSU campus. The colony disbanded in 1981 and the fraternity adopted the name "Nu Pi" and operated as a local fraternity for four years. In the fall of 1985, the brothers of Nu Pi officially became a colony of Triangle Fraternity and the first pledge class was initiated at the Armour chapter on December 6, 1986. Two additional pledge classes were initiated at the Purdue chapter (1987) and Toledo chapter (1989). The Tri-State University Chapter of Triangle Fraternity received its charter on April 15, 1989... 82 years to the day after Triangle was founded.

History of Triangle FraternityTriangle seeks members by program of study (list). Such restrictions are not based upon race, religion, color, or national origin. Course of study restrictions ensure a relatively homogenous group. Thus the brothers can help each other and support the environment for study that such curricula demand.

Now in its ninth decade, Triangle is a strong bond of closely knit chapters throughout the United States (map). Leaders on the university and college campuses where it has chapters are proud to wear the Triangle badge. And a great many leaders in professional and industrial fields are equally proud of their fraternity heritage through membership in Triangle.

Triangle continually strives for success, whether it be academically, athletically, or socially. As leaders on campus and in the community, Triangle Brothers lead by example and are involved in many campus organizations.
